Sensory Profiling
Sensory Assessment
There are various sensory based assessments and tools that can be conducted to determine how an individual processes and responds to various sensory stimuli. One of the most used assessments in the Adolescent and Adult Sensory Profile. These are commonly administered and interpreted by clinicians with experience in sensory processing such as Occupational Therapists. At Recovery In Mind, we always include sensory screening when we conduct comprehensive functional assessments, as this can give us lots of rich information about how someone experiences the world and can determine how we intervene during our therapy sessions.
Sensory Profile
The sensory profile is designed to assess an individual's sensory processing patterns and preferences. It aims to provide insight into how adolescents and adults perceive and respond to sensory stimuli in their environment.
This information can be valuable for understanding how sensory processing influences daily activities, social interactions, and overall well-being in adolescents and adults.Ultimately, the Sensory Profile can aid in developing strategies to support individuals in managing sensory experiences more effectively and enhancing their participation in various aspects of life.
There are four quadrants that the person receives feedback on, and these are based on an individual’s neurological threshold, as well as how at they respond or manages themselves in relation to sensory input (i.e. some people are more passive whilst some are more active).
It is important to note that these scores are not rated as ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ Everyone has their own sensory profile and their own sensory preferences and needs!

Why is this beneficial?
A lof of people are curious about their sensory profiles and enjoy learning about their sensory based needs. Knowledge of personal preferences increases self-awareness, self-autonomy and can be very empowering for someone. Being able to provide this information to significant others so they can understand is vital as well (i.e. partners, teachers, employers).
What is Sensory Modulation
Sensory modulation refers to using our different senses to self-regulate so we can function and meet the challenges of day to day life. Think of it like a volume knob on a radio: sensory modulation is like adjusting that knob to find the right level of stimulation that helps you function effectively in different situations. It's about finding a balance between feeling overwhelmed and feeling engaged, so you can participate in daily activities and interact with the world around you in a meaningful way.
