About Occupational Therapy
What is Occupational Therapy?
The term ‘occupation’ refers to all the everyday things that people do to occupy their time and bring meaning and purpose to their life. Occupational therapists use client-centred and strengths-based approaches to promote health and wellbeing through occupation. Their primary goal is to allow individuals to be as independent as possible and facilitate participation and engagement in occupations. What is a mental health Occupational Therapist?
Mental health Occupational therapists explore what may be limiting an individual’s performance in their chosen occupations. Using psychological and recovery-based models, they work to facilitate resilience and independence in roles and occupations that are most important to the client. Their interventions can result in greater social connection, personal autonomy and improvement in sense of self. Engagement in purposeful occupations can improve mental wellbeing, aid in recovery and allow an individual to feel empowered.
Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light. can be found even in the darkest of times...
